RIZE - K.O. 16 April 2008 Seems like it’s been a while. But I’m back with another stack of albums from last decade to rip through.K.O. is the sixth studio album by RIZE, a rock band who debuted in 1997 and has gone through various line-up changes since. The band is currently a trio, although two of the members have been a part of RIZE since its inception: frontman, guitarist, and vocalist Jesse McFaddin aka. Takenaka Sorato, and drummer Kaneko Nobuaki. Currently KenKen is the bassist, but that role has been turbulent. As a Japanese-American, Jesse has spent a lot of time in both countries and since he is the lyricist and vocalist for RIZE you will hear that duality reflected in their music. For example, part of K.O. criticizes George W. Bush, whose presidency in the U.S. was ending as this album came out. RIZE has also participated with a number of hip-hop and rap artists, both domestic Japanese musicians and foreign, pre-dominantly American ones. The band unmistakably incorporates elements from those genres into their flavor of rock. I think it will be easy to see why RIZE has always been more popular with younger listeners their entire career.I’ll be trying to upload an album a day once again, although I might upload a few at a time if I’m expecting to be away for a few days. dustbox - Seeds of Rainbows 22 August 2007 Dustbox is a pop-punk band who made their start in 1996, playing in clubs around Saitama. It began via the efforts of Suga, the lead vocalist and guitarist, who would quickly recruit his friend Joji to play bass; other musicians cycled in and out of their live line-up during this time. It would take them four years to grab the attention of a studio label, which is coincidentally when Reiji joined dustbox as their drummer, establishing the three-person line-up that dustbox has kept since 2000. Their tendency to use English contributes to their pop-punk sound, which is a lot more melodic than punishing, but it also makes dustbox one of those Japanese bands whose music is easily accessible to people who have absolutely no understanding of the Japanese language.

The Feather Side - Eternal Serenade 11 November 2009 The Feather Side is an indie emo-rock band that started out in Fukuoka. But there are eighty-four billion other emo-rock groups on the planet. What helps differentiate the Feather Side, and what makes Eternal Serenade a particularly great album, is the variety in their melodies, often backed by powerful drum beats from Takamitsu Hiruma and front-man Kyouhei Dou’s crystalline vocals. He uses English exclusively throughout the album, with enunciation clear enough that most people would never guess the band is Japanese if they didn’t already know. The Feather Side has a tendency to draw out the length of their songs though; Eternal Serenade has only twelve songs but lasts a full eighty-two minutes, including an awesome instrumental closing track that accounts for nearly fifteen minutes by itself. But the band uses these lengthy songs to explore melodic transitions instead of simply repeating the same measures over and over, which goes a long way towards making Eternal Serenade the great album that it is.
